In this paper, we introduce the concept of VR Open Scores: aleatoric score-based virtual scenarios where an aleatoric score is embedded in a virtual environment. This idea builds upon the notion of graphic scores and composed in- strument, and apply them in a new context. Our proposal also explores possible parallels between open meaning in interaction design, and aleatoric score, conceptualized as Open Work by the Italian philosopher Umberto Eco. Our approach has two aims. The first aim is to create an envi- ronment where users can immerse themselves in the visual elements of a score while listening to the corresponding mu- sic. The second aim is to facilitate users to develop a per- sonal relationship with both the system and the score. To achieve those aims, as a practical implementation of our proposed concept, we developed two immersive scenarios: a 360o video and an interactive space. We conclude pre- senting how our design aims were accomplished in the two scenarios, and describing positive and negative elements of our implementations.

In today’s scenario, mental stress is common among people. Stress can be defined as tension arising due to daily life’s emotional, psychological, and physical pressures. It has become a serious issue in the modern world as it affects not only our physical health but also our work performance, passion for work, and general attitude in daily life. Chronic exposure to stress exhibits physical symptoms such as aches, muscle tension, and dizziness. If not treated well, it paves the way toward severe health consequences which results in depression, cardiovascular diseases, sleep disorders, degradation in the immune system, and cancer. Stress can be detected at an early stage by measuring the variability in a few parameters. The virtual reality (VR) based IoT embedded system is designed to transfer data through the cloud platform. Electromyography (EMG), galvanic skin response, oxygen saturation level, and heart rate are used to detect stress. The statistical analysis has performed on the acquired VR sensor data and MATLAB software was used for the statistical analysis of EMG signals. The VR technology was utilized in this research for stress alleviation by revealing the human subjects to happy video and prior to that stress was induced in the human subjects by using illusion video. The convolution neural network was also employed in this research work for the classification of stress and non-stress states. The results reveal that VR technology with the aid of pleasant music or vide...

Jun 3, 2024 · Abstract:Previous research demonstrates that the interruption of immersive experiences may lead to a bias in the results of questionnaires.
Previous research demonstrates that the interruption of immersive experiences may lead to a bias in the results of questionnaires. Thus, the traditional way of presenting questionnaires, paper-based or web-based, may not be compatible with evaluating VR experiences. Recent research has shown the positive impact of embedding questionnaires contextually into the virtual environment. However, a comprehensive overview of the available VR questionnaire solutions is currently missing. Furthermore, no clear taxonomy exists for these different solutions in the literature. To address this, we present a literature review of VR questionnaire user interfaces (UI) following PRISMA guidelines. Our search returned 1.109 initial results, which were screened for eligibility, resulting in a corpus of 25 papers. This paper contributes to HCI and games research with a literature review of embedded questionnaires in VR, discussing the advantages and disadvantages and introducing a taxonomy of in-VR questionnaire UIs.

Neuropsychological tests of executive function have limited real-world predictive and functional relevance. An emerging solution for this limitation is to adapt the tests for implementation in virtual reality (VR). We thus developed two VR-based versions of the classic Color-Trails Test (CTT), a well-validated pencil-and-paper executive function test assessing sustained (Trails A) and divided (Trails B) attention—one for a large-scale VR system (DOME-CTT) and the other for a portable head-mount display VR system (HMD-CTT). We then evaluated construct validity, test–retest reliability, and age-related discriminant validity of the VR-based versions and explored effects on motor function. Healthy adults (n = 147) in three age groups (young: n = 50; middle-aged: n = 80; older: n = 17) participated. All participants were administered the original CTT, some completing the DOME-CTT (14 young, 29 middle-aged) and the rest completing the HMD-CTT. Primary outcomes were Trails A and B completion times (tA, tB). Spatiotemporal characteristics of upper-limb reaching movements during VR test performance were reconstructed from motion capture data. Statistics included correlations and repeated measures analysis of variance. Construct validity was substantiated by moderate correlations between the’gold standard’ pencil-and-paper CTT and the VR adaptations (DOME-CTT: tA 0.58, tB 0.71; HMD-CTT: tA 0.62, tB 0.69). VR versions showed relatively high test–retest reliability (intraclass correlatio...

Virtual reality (VR) headsets, with embedded micro-electromechanical systems, have the potential to assess the mechanical heart’s functionality and respiratory activity in a non-intrusive way and without additional sensors by utilizing the ballistocardiographic principle. To test the feasibility of this approach for opportunistic physiological monitoring, thirty healthy volunteers were studied at rest in different body postures (sitting (SIT), standing (STAND) and supine (SUP)) while accelerometric and gyroscope data were recorded for 30 s using a VR headset (Oculus Go, Oculus, Microsoft, USA) simultaneously with a 1-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) signal for mean heart rate (HR) estimation. In addition, longer VR acquisitions (50 s) were performed under controlled breathing in the same three postures to estimate the respiratory rate (RESP). Three frequency-based methods were evaluated to extract from the power spectral density the corresponding frequency. By the obtained results, the gyroscope outperformed the accelerometer in terms of accuracy with the gold standard. As regards HR estimation, the best results were obtained in SIT, with Rs2 (95% confidence interval) = 0.91 (0.81−0.96) and bias (95% Limits of Agreement) −1.6 (5.4) bpm, followed by STAND, with Rs2 = 0.81 (0.64−0.91) and −1.7 (11.6) bpm, and SUP, with Rs2 = 0.44 (0.15−0.68) and 0.2 (19.4) bpm. For RESP rate estimation, SUP showed the best feasibility (98%) to obtain a reliable value from each gyroscope axis, leadi...

As a carrier of human cultural heritage, it is of great practical significance to apply VR technology to the construction of modern digital museums. This paper combines artificial intelligence and SNN algorithms for image segmentation and proposes the overall framework of ‘embedded image acquisition and SNN segmentation processing’. This system is utilized to improve the picture clarity and delay efficiency of VR technology and reduce the vertigo feeling of the user experience. The VR environment of the digital museum is designed according to the user’s intentions. Finally, the effectiveness of the designed museum VR environment is verified by evaluating the comfort, interaction, and emotional experience of the VR museum. The experimental results show that in terms of comfort experience, the SSQ scale score of the VR museum experience based on the embedded image processing is 7.1, which is nearly double the score of the original VR museum experience. In terms of interaction and emotional experience, the overall satisfaction score of the VR environment design of the M museum was 9.4. The two aspects of emotional experience and cultural communication effects were evaluated as 4.27 and 4.05, respectively. It indicates that the user satisfaction of the VR environment design of the AI and digital museum based on the embedded image processing is high, and that this VR environment design can effectively improve the communication of the museum.
